Description

Vienna Philharmonic 1 ounce (Münze Österreich)

The exceptional success of the world famous Vienna Philharmonic gold coin has led the Münze Österreich mint to offer collectors a silver version of the famous design. When it was introduced to the public in 2008, the silver Vienna Philharmonic was the only European coin minted from 99,9% pure silver. It became exceedingly popular in a short amount of time. Several million silver Vienna Philharmonic 1 ounce coins are sold across the world every year.

The Austrian mint Münze Österreich is owned by the Central Bank of Austria. It is one of the oldest mints in the world. In historical records, it was first mentioned in 1371, but the real story began about two hundred years before. There is an interesting tale about how it was established. On his way back from the Crusades, Richard the Lionheart was apprehended in Austria because of a prior offense towards Duke Leopold V. Richard paid 15 tons of silver in ransom. Leopold decided to use this silver to produce coins, thus starting the first mint business in Vienna. Along with gold coins, the Münze Österreich produces Austrian euro coins, as well as commemorative medals. Auro Domus is the official partner of the Münze Österreich mint in Croatia.
