Australian Kangaroo 1 ounce (Perth Mint)

Australian Kangaroo, also known also as the Australian Gold Nugget, is the bestselling item of the Perth Mint. It changes in design every year, making it the most famous characteristic. Having been produced in limited editions, it is much wanted among collectors. Because of this, it is considered a rare item and its price on the market may raise with time, even faster than the price of gold itself. The only other gold coin in the world that changes design regularly is the Chinese panda.

The Australian Gold Nugget has been produced since 1986. In the first three years of its production, the background of the coin was represented by different samples of gold nuggets mined across Australia. Since 1989 the design has been altered so it depicts different kinds of kangaroos, the most famous symbol of Australian continent. Due to this change in design, the coin has been unofficially named the Australian Kangaroo. Even though the Perth Mint has produced gold coins in larger sizes, the Australian Kangaroo, weighing one ounce, is a standard coin and is the largest on the market at the moment.

The Perth Mint is the official gold coin mint in Australia and is owned by the State of Western Australia. The mint started operating in 1899, two years prior to the Australian continent becoming a federation.

The Perth Mint is also known for gold coins of very unusual weights, such as a 1-kg Australian Kangaroo. It is no surprise that in 2011 this mint produced the largest gold coin in the world – 80cm in diameter, 12cm in width and weighing 1012 kg. This gold coin weighing more than one ton is made of pure gold and its value at the moment of crafting was 53 million Australian dollars.
