Investment silver sometimes grows faster than gold

The price of silver generally follows the price of gold. But there are certain exceptions that capable investors know how to utilize. Specifically, because it is the leader of the sector, the price of gold rises sooner and faster than that of silver. That is why in the second wave of the rise in the value of precious metals, silver generally gains in value more than gold.

As with gold, the price of silver rises in times of crisis, when the demand for silver as an investment increases significantly. However, the price of silver still has different ups and downs compared to the price of gold. This is why many investors invest in both precious metals.

Investing in silver - opportunities and challenges

Investing in silver has its own specifics, one of them concerning monetary policy. Gold is tax-free almost everywhere in the world. But silver has a different tax status in different countries. In Croatia, for example, VAT is paid on silver bars and silver coins. This can be worked out by remote purchases and secured storage in countries that do not charge taxes on silver.

Silver also has a significantly higher use value compared to gold. As a result, the demand for investment silver has a smaller impact on the movements of its price. Of the total silver sales in 2019, almost 60% were intended for industrial use.

An additional challenge when buying silver are the relatively higher storage costs compared to gold. Gold bars have about 80 times less mass than silver bars of the same value. On the other hand, this price-to-mass ratio represents an advantage of silver. Specifically, because the average ratio of the value of a gram of gold to the value of a gram of silver is 1 to 80, when this ratio increases to 1 to 90 or 1 to 100, it is a clear sign that silver is undervalued. Investors use this as a signal to purchase. An additional advantage of silver is the relatively low price. Therefore, it represents an ideal initial investment for entering the precious metals market.
